Summertime's on the way, and the heat is already here! Jessica sent a little insight from the studio where she studies in Florida on dealing with the heat: Take a siest-asana! "It's common in the hotter regions of the world to dial it down during the hottest hours of the day. And even if our ramped-up American culture doesn't support the practice of resting for it's own sake, we can buck the system for our own well-being." Friday afternoon's Deep and Mellow class is a great opportunity to come out of the heat and enjoy a restorative yoga session. Julie Tampa is offering a special restorative class on Sunday, June 19th. Just found this quote from Iyengar: "When I practice, I am a philosopher. When I teach, I am a scientist. When I demonstrate, I am an artist" I think he speaks for all of us regardless of pose or profession... Nicki's Vrittis 02/28/2011
Oh those shitty vritts! By Nicki Doane February 17th, 2011 I don’t really know why it’s been so difficult for me to adopt the blogging habit yet..I really want to do it and I always have these great ideas, but never while I’m sitting at my computer! Anyways, enough self limiting thoughts here..Thank you Patanjali…I have been quite absorbed in the Yoga Sutras lately. This is probably because I am teaching two Teacher Trainings simultaneously and it’s such a core part of the course. If we only practice asana without recognizing it’s penetrating effects, we set ourselves up for disaster. I know the Sadhana(practice) is working when the halahala( toxic inner substance..vrittis, etc) begins to rise. This is the moment that I know that we are actually starting to stir things up and move beyond our comfort zone. Patanjali starts his first book, Samadhi Pada by first defining Yoga and telling us what that state looks like. Then immediately in the fourth sutra he tells us that when we are not in the state of yoga( Nirodhaha), our tendency is to actually believe and identify with the vrittis ( whirling agitations on the mind). Instead of taking personal responsibility for them, our tendency is to project them on everyone around us. Unfortunately this always brings us pain. And yet we continue to do it over and over throughout our lives. It’s kind of like running on a gerbil wheel..it never stops, unless we are willing to do the difficult work of grabbing the and taking control of our mind. It is usually at this point in our practice that we either step up for ourselves or we abandon our practice for fear of what we might find. This is just the way it is. I believe that it is critical for our personal evolution and involution that we do the difficult work and deal with our stuff before it deals with us. It is unfortunate that the hala hala rises first, but shit floats and rises first…literally. Once we see how good it ultimately feels to take responsibility for our own happiness, we simply cannot stop. And that is why I will continue to teach in spite of the projections that may or may not come my way. I always remember Krishna in the Bhagadvagita when he tells Arjuna that he is not working in vain. And also to always remember that the work lies in the journey and not in the destination….Peace and Om…Nicki Rachel Garrison Photography 02/23/2011
Moore County's best kept secret: Rachel Garrison Photography. Not only is she a tall, blond beautiful yogini who has the most adorable baby but she is probably one of the most talented photographers I have ever run across. She recently came into the studio and took some shots of Ashley and I. Honestly, I had no expectations and barely made it to the studio on time. Rachel was quick, professional and boy does she have an eye for light, color and style. I am probably the most non photogenic person I know. I never take a good photo and I can't stand any pictures I see of myself. Rachel turned both Ashley and I into Yoga Journal Supermodels.... She's amazing. You can contact her at rachelgarrisonpotography@gmail.com for wedding, family, personal and business photos. She comes highly recommended by Ashley and I. Here are a few of favorites: Ashley's Thai Yoga Therapy. Call the studio or email Ashley at ashleysmithson@mac.com to set up an appointment. Beautiful!! Heart and Soul. Cheeeeeese... CHATTARUNGA! How many times have you heard me say that? Thanks Rachel. You are amazing! Yoga For The Heart - The Pilot 02/15/2011
